The Ryder Cup Matches are one of the last great sporting events founded on prestige rather than prize money, span 34 competitions over 77 years. The origin of the idea to stage international matches between the best American professionals and those of Great Britain is a subject of debate among golf historians.
The move to include the continental players was a major step in upgrading the Ryder Cup competitive level.
This year Ireland are very proud to be playing host to this wonderful and one of the last great sporting events. Following the superb performance of the Irish participants at the Ryder Cup in Detroit last September, Ireland can look forward to hosting the Ryder Cup in 2006 with even greater confidence than before.
